OUGD103 Evaluation

1. What practical skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

'Don't Panic/Pure' This brief was good to work much more freely visually for idea development. With only a few constraints for size and to be eventually digital, because it was a poster you can really go and do anything you want. My drawing skills aren't great although I wanted to touch on a style similar to the yellow brief back in the first module. To improve further, I used illustrator to recreate initial sketches and filled colour.. Im happy with the results.
'Communication is a virus' The graphics tablet became my friend for this brief, after the halfway change over from Ian and David they suggested giving the laziness an image which we were promoting, it came to animals and I wasn't confident with my drawing skills, the graphics tablet however allowed me to sketch and loosely trace photographs and generate a style, keeping to the brief. I love how they turned out and want to try more illustrative work in the future.
'How to' Software skills and idea developments were the key skills in this particular brief, I wanted to include a large amount of information on a credit card sized piece of stock and through development on software trials and drawn development, reached this.
'Speaking from experience' My favourite brief from the module, and working again with illustrator which hasn't been my strong point previously. Paper craft has played a large part of this particular brief and has been successful. I enjoyed the previous mailshot brief, and just wanted to continue something similar.

2. What approaches to/methods of problem solving have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have alot more experimentation, especially for the 'speaking from' brief, if you have a physical piece of work in front of you, I have found it easier to make decisions on where to take the design next and what needs to be changed and take into consideration more with paper stocks or colour choices. its been really useful and hope it continues like this. The collab brief I enjoyed the least from all of the modules from the first year, communication is the key (and ironically in the name of the brief) even if you don't work side by side with another person in a collaborative piece, you need to know you are the same page. Our design was obviously not designed at the same time and little communication was the result was that the piece was unsuccessful.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how will you capitalise on these?

Paper crafting and experimentation have been benefits for myself to work with a physical piece of work infront of me. I will experiment more with design and decisions and dedicate time to these and develop ideas, it definitely helped with the speaking brief, and shows.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully

Communication, between brief specs and other designers in the process. If you work in a collaborative brief you need to engage with your partner in order for the work to be successful. Putting work off doesn't help, because it just makes things worst later on.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

+ Be more patient with close designers in the work process (especially collaborative)

+ Be more visual in the initial idea generation instead of writing (but still write)

+ Manage my time better. Its an obvious one, but things like the blog, and the little things that count need to be addressed.

+ Experiment more! Its helped with the development of the 'speaking brief' and needs to be more in future.

+ Expand some formats.. Paper stocks and printing techniques are my next port of call, and should be addressed.

6. Are there anythings that we could have done differently that would have benefitted your progress?

This darn blog.. I have good times with it and bad times, I need to engage from day one. For visual language it was awesome to collect information but just hasn't inspired me this time. I'm disappointed.

7. How would you grade yourself on the following areas? (5= excellent, 1=poor)

Attendance: 4

Punctuality: 4

Motivation: 3

Commitment: 4

Quality of work produced: 4

Quantity of work produced: 3

Contribution to the group: 3

'Speaking from experience' finals + in action!

The final design, printed on gloss paper around 100gsm. The idea of the pack was to be distributed as shown either handed out or in the pigeon holes we have in studio 2.

Coming along nicely.

Lots of experimentation with sketch models, determining paper stocks and colours. Should be quite good.

Can't you tell Ive found a new website I love..?

Such a smart idea..

trouble working?

Would double up perfectly with a cold student house too.. keep.. one arm warm..
How good is this? bit steep at $115 but could be the perfect solution for wasting time.

Speaking from experience motivation pieces?

Eatypography
Google maps typography? brillianttt. But probably posted already :( pretty good though ay?
I know I haven't blogged in a while, but I couldn't resist not putting this up before someone else does :) Pegged skin to make letters, how BRILLIANT

'Experience' inspiration

Contemporary Graphic design related to the experience brief. Just a few examples of the pieces ill take inspiration from including the amazing Gavin Strange, Jon Burgerman and Matt W Moore.

Speaking from Experience

The current brief is to design a graphic solution to a problem/issue or subject that we ourselves had in our first few weeks as level 1 students, that we can give, send, show and advise the next years intake what to expect.

My initial 5 subjects/issues/problems that I found or what I thought new students might have were as follows.

1.'You will need sleep'
- Sleep patterns
- Managing time
2. 'Coping away from home'
- What to expect at halls
- Looking after yourself
- The fact everyone is in the same boat
3. 'The loan won't last forever'
- Budgeting for food/uni
- Finding more money
- Saving money
- Offers available
4. 'Theres more to life than Graphic Design'
- Enjoying the uni experience
- Make time to relax
- Explore your surroundings
5. 'Is my work I'm doing right/good enough?'
- The first year doesn't technically count, so theres no need to worry.
- Its ok to make mistakes
- The work load

After discussing the possibilities and ideas here I have combined different aspects of the issues to create a new subject/question to answer. 'Taking advantage of being a student' The idea is explain the benefits of being a student, all the advantages available such as discounts, grants, freebies, social events, tips, tricks and useful advice. Available from many food outlets, shops and entertainment attractions there are special student discounts available at certain times, after collecting the information in different categories I would like to attempt to create a week/fortnight (which ever appropriate) displaying when these discounts are available, to save you money.

For previous briefs, my most successful was the mail-shot campaign to help with recycling/reusing plastic bags and the format I think would be suitable for this particular subject. Hopefully not only will it be a pack of information but will include a feature to be used again aswell as the information. Currently a small money box for spare change but this could be changed from feedback at crits.. possibly another bag with stronger materials?

Issue/Question: 'Taking advantage of being a student'
What I'm going to do: Produce money saving information about discounts, grants and freebies combined with a useful reusable feature, such as a money box or bag
How I'm going to do this: Mail-shot format for ease of distribution.

Collab animals

Collab work meant I tried out a graphics tablet, and created these pieces. I'm really happy with them.

How to.. score with a kick in rugby,

Cards used as 'pub ammo' for blaggers, allowing people to get a jist of a sport with enough information on a card disguised as a bank card.

Pure - Don't Panic!

Our first brief was to either create a poster for Don't Panic under the theme 'pure' or work towards a postcard for Recognition Day (May 4th) I chose the Pure theme and created a montage of pure imagery decided from a questionnaire of what pure meant to them.. I took it literally and attempted to place all the images together in a light hearted drawing style.
